The European research centre CERN is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year. To mark the occasion, events were organised at partner institutions across Europe, including at the University of Rostock. The highlight was a public evening lecture in the auditorium of the University of Rostock on the subject of ‘Behind the scenes at CERN: How electrical engineering makes particle physics possible’. The speaker was Prof Dr Ursula van Rienen from the Chair of Theoretical Electrical Engineering at the University of Rostock. Kurt Sandkuhl, who as Dean opened the evening event on 17 September 2024 with a welcoming address, reminded the audience that key components of today's internet were also developed at CERN by Sir Tim Berners-Lee.
