For many years the modeling of processes, enterprises and knowledge forms the frame of business information systems (IS) research in Rostock. In general, this research field is concerned with the systematic modeling process, analysis and evolution of domain knowledge aligned towards pre-defined enterprise goals. Therefore, it combines traditional topics of IS research (e.g. IS modeling) with work from informatics (e.g. knowledge representation) and approach from the industrial organization (e.g. enterprise engineering). In this context, in Rostock our core competencies include the development of modeling methods, tools that support the modeling process, user participation during the model development, modeling practices and the value of modeling. The modeling of processes, enterprise and knowledge is applied for various purposes. A particular modeling purpose usually leads to specific methods, tools and practices.
