September 21 to 23, the 21st International Conference on Perspectives in Business Informatics Research, BIR 2022, took place at Rostock University. The conference consisted of the doctoral consortium, two workshops, one tutorial and the main track:

Main conference

The central theme of BIR 2022 was “Business Informatics for Sustainable Innovation”. Achieving sustainability requires a multi-perspective approach taking organizational, economic, and technical aspects into account. In a world of cloud computing, social networks and big data, additional challenges for business informatics and the design of information systems architectures are introduced. To deal with these challenges, a close cooperation of researchers from different disciplines such as information systems, business informatics, and computer science is required.

The main conference included two keynotes: Dr. Philipp Wree (Fraunhofer IGD Rostock) on “Smart Farming and Agricultural Digitization - with more Information for less Resource Demand” and Prof. Mikael Lind (Maritime University, Gothenburg, Sweden) on “Maritime Informatics - a contributor for a high performing and sustainable maritime industry”. The scientific program included 14 papers organized in topical sessions as follows: Information system development; modeling methods and assistance; applications and technologies; and digital business.

Doctoral Consortium

The PhD Workshop gave PhD students in the field of Information Systems the opportunity to present their ongoing PhD projects and to get advice and guidance from experienced researchers (usually professors) on thematic orientation, research methodology, related work or complementary work. A total of four submissions to the workshop were accepted, presented, and discussed.

Thematic Workshops

Two thematic workshops were also held in the context of the BIR conference:

- 13th Workshop on Information Logistics and Digital Transformation (ILOG 2022).

- 7th Workshop on Managed Complexity (ManComp 2022).

Each workshop had its own organizers and an international program committee. After the peer review process, the program committees of the two workshops have 14 scientific papers for presentation. All papers address important and emerging topics in information systems.

Hands-on Tutorial on OMiLAB and Scenes2Model

As the city of Rostock is located at the Baltic Sea, ships and especially cruise ships play an important role in the region of Rostock. The headquarters of AIDA cruises is located in Rostock and there are a number of shipyards in the city. That's why the hands-on workshop on OMiLAB and Scenes2Model at BIR 2022 was related to this sector. The focus was on disruptive business models in the cruise industry. The University of Rostock is one of the locations equipped with tools by OMiLAB. In the workshop, participants were offered the opportunity to try out the Scene2Model tool in combination with SAP Scenes in a design thinking workshop.
