There are potential applications for artificial intelligence (AI) in many companies - they just need to be found and implemented. The Center for Artificial Intelligence in MV at the University of Rostock has been mediating at this interface between research and practice since 2020.

The result is a network of researchers with all kinds of expertise in the field of AI and entrepreneurs from various sectors. The network covers the whole of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and is constantly growing.

On the research side, the universities in Stralsund and Wismar and the University of Greifswald are among the members, as is the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research in Rostock. Successful companies from the state such as Planet AI, deeeper.technology and GWA Hygiene are also active in the network. They are all already using AI and can pass on their experience.

"The center pools expertise on which AI methodology or process is best suited to a particular task or who is most familiar with it," says Prof. Kurt Sandkuhl, holder of the Chair of Information Systems at the University of Rostock and one of the initiators. "We don't want to compete with each other in our own country, we should work together."

Both free broad-based and in-depth consulting as well as individual coaching for small and medium-sized companies are offered. "We organize larger events or workshops for broad-based consulting," explains coordinator Emil Löffler. "We want to provide general information and facilitate new contacts." Once a month, there is an AI livestream in which experts talk about possibilities, limits and offers.

Tailor-made consulting

Individual advice is important for many companies. Start-ups with an affinity for technology in particular make use of this opportunity. "We find out what the problem is and whether there could be an AI solution for it. If so, we draw on our research network," continues Löffler. Each of the scientists involved contributes special knowledge that can be used depending on the application. "They are happy to pass this on because they are interested in putting their research into practice." When everything fits together, computer scientists and entrepreneurs enter into in-depth consultation.
