KEOD: Best Paper Award for Rostock Business Informatics

Achim Reiz and Kurt Sandkuhl presented two papers at the 14th edition of the International Conference on Knowledge Engineering and Ontology Development (KEOD). The paper "An Ontology for Ontology Metrics: Creating a Shared Understanding of Measurable Attributes for Humans and Machines" (link: http://doi.org/10.5220/0011551500003335) highlights the flexible architecture of the NEOntometrics software. This software for computing ontology metrics can be flexibly configured and adapted to one's own needs by using an ontology as the logical underpinnng. NEOntometrics is the only ontology evaluation software so far, which combines (by the ontology described) various frameworks in a scalable application.

The second paper, "Debunking the Stereotypical Ontology Development Process" (link: http://doi.org/10.5220/0011573600003335), evaluates the data obtained from NEOntometrics. In an extensive analysis, the chair investigated developmental histories of ontologies and showed their great diversity. We investigated five hypotheses for ontology development and show that these hypotheses are not generally valid for ontologies. Development processes are often much more complex and less continuous than previously assumed. This research is an important building block to measure the quality of ontologies via metrics in the future. The quality and relevance of this research was also confirmed by the program committee of the KEOD conference, the paper was awarded as the best of the conference.
